This year Armory Disc Golf will be bringing you the second season of the highest quality amateur disc golf tour in Texas - Throwing Down the Gauntlet, sponsored by MVP Disc Sports. This year-long season will have tournaments (from flex starts to 2 day B Tiers) across the state in which you will earn points based on your performance. Then at the end of the season, the top point earners (alongside Gold/Platinum Tier winners) will earn a place in the end of season Invitational Championship, where you'll compete for 💰 SEVERAL THOUSAND 💰 in added cash and prizes.
TDTG History, Present, and Future
Last year we had over 1000 players join us in these events for several thousand rounds total, culminating in a championship where we handed out over $5000 in added cash and prizes. As the industry leaders in this season points format, we look forward to building on top of this to make 2024 even bigger and to presenting the absolute best tournament experience possible. Part of this is that for 2024, Throwing Down the Gauntlet will be sponsored by MVP Disc Sports, the Leader of Disc Golf Technology 😎 We're stoked about bringing you the best discs in the game as part of the best local tournament series in the game.
The Tournament Format
Throwing Down the Gauntlet 2024 will have 3 tournament "tiers", including the NEW addition of Platinum Tier events this year. These will be weighted differently for season points standings and Invitational bids, but they will each also function independently as standalone tournaments- i.e., eligible players will receive payouts and trophies after each event in addition to the points they earn towards season standings.
Points System
- Points are awarded on a tournament by tournament basis
- Players will receive 5 points for each event they play in
- Players will earn 2 additional points for each person in their division that they beat (or tie), up to a maximum of 40 points (20 players) per event. For every player beat after 20 in a single division, 1 point will be awarded. This is to reward those who play well in larger events without skewing results too much towards one event (particularly flex starts, which by their nature are more variable in attendance)
- Players will earn 5 additional points for winning their division (in which two or more players competed) in a particular tournament.
- Gold Tier events will have a 2x point multiplier and Platinum Tier events will have a 4x point multiplier
Points Examples
- If you play a Silver Tier event in a division with 7 players and place 2nd, you will earn 5 points for playing and 10 points for your placement, for a total of 15 points (Gold Tier would be 30 points, Platinum Tier would be 60 points)
- If you play a Silver Tier event in a division with 7 players and place 1st, you will earn 5 points for playing, 12 points for your placement, and 5 points for winning your division, for a total of 22 points (Gold Tier would be 44 points, Platinum Tier would be 88 points)
- If you play a Silver Tier event in a division with 28 players and place 3rd, you would earn 5 points for playing and 45 points for your placement (20 x 2 points per player, 5 x 1 point per player), for a total of 50 points. (Gold Tier would be 100 points, Platinum Tier would be 200 points)
Tier Levels
Silver Tier -
These are flex start events that will be hosted a few times a month in several different regions across the state (Houston, Dallas, College Station, Austin, Temple) They are a great way to get cheaper rated rounds in while stacking up points towards a regular season championship and an Invitational bid. Your top 7 Silver Tier finishes of the season will count towards your point total, so shake off those bad rounds and work your way to the top 💪
Gold Tier -
These are mostly 2 round, 1 day shotgun start C Tier events. We will hold 2-3 of these in several different regions across the state (Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, College Station, Temple) as an expansion in 2024. You will receive a custom player pack from MVP Disc Sports as well as be eligible for several CTPs and mini game prizes as a part of your entry into these events, which we are confident are at the highest tier of tournament value you'll find. There is no cap on the number of Gold Tier events that count towards your season points standings- we look forward to seeing some of you at several different locations at the best disc golf courses across the state again this year. 👊 Gold Tier events will have a 2x point multiplier for season points standings
Platinum Tier -
These are 2-3 round, 1-2 day shotgun start B Tier events with at least $1000 added cash + prizes thrown into the prize pool. For 2024 we plan on hosting Platinum Tier events at Research Park in College Station, Harry Myers Park in Rockwall, and McDade Park in Conroe (with a potential upgrade of 1-2 more Gold Tiers). You will receive a custom player pack from MVP Disc Sports as well as be eligible for several CTPs and mini game prizes as a part of your entry into these events, which we are confident are at the highest tier of tournament value you'll find. 🏆 Platinum Tier events will have a 4x point multiplier for season standings and your TOP 2 Platinum Tier finishes will count towards season standings
Regular Season Standings
"Regular Season" Points standings will be posted after each event and champions will be crowned for the top point earners in each division for the season. 👑
Last year's player of the year, Daniel Hubert, won MA3 and received a yearlong Armory Disc Golf sponsorship in addition to his trophy and a feature on our social media pages. We had some divisions won by flex start "grinders" and some won by those who dominated Gold Tier events. We're excited to see what 2024 brings and #whowillrise
End of Season Invitational
For each participant in each tournament across the state and throughout the year, we will set aside cash to distribute at the end of season Invitational Championship. Last year we had over $5000 added cash and prizes at the Invitational, and this year we will be well exceeding that with our expanded tournament schedule and sponsorship support from MVP Discs. We will be hosting ~120 players for the Invitational, with invites based roughly on division participation throughout the year. ONLY divisions with 4+ players will be hosted at the Invitational- if you qualify for a division that is not hosted, your invite will extend to the next division up (e.g., if you qualify for MA60 and there are only 2 players in your division, you will be offered a spot in MP60 or a ratings-appropriate division). More info on this can be found on the final sheet of the season standings
ADDED CASH + PRIZES WILL BE DISTRIBUTED ACROSS ALL DIVISIONS AT THE INVITATIONAL
2024 is going to be the biggest yet and we're excited to play some disc golf with you 😎

ADDITIONAL NOTES
- Unsanctioned Doubles played at Silver Tier events are "for fun" and will not accrue points towards the EOS Invitational, but they will still be eligible for individual event payout
- If players change divisions mid-season, their points will not transfer over to the new division UNLESS they rate out of their previous division OR it is approved by Armory Disc Golf for extenuating circumstances. This means if you want to qualify for the invitational as an MA2 player, you need to play MA2 during the season (for example).
- Gold Tier event division winners will only receive an automatic bid to the Invitational if there are at least 3 players in their division (points will still be earned for those divisions even if an automatic bid is not offered). Players will be notified before the start of the event if their division does not qualify for an automatic invite and will be given the option for a full refund, to move divisions, or to remain in a non-qualifying division for that event.
***Details including park locations, added cash, and invitational tiers are subject to change throughout the season. We will keep you informed as these changes occur***
